Radical online: Children and young people as a target group for extremist online activities

Children and young people are considered the most important target group for extremist online activities. The question therefore arises as to how children and young people can be protected from harmful content such as propaganda, fake news or hate speech. Interaction risks such as direct incitement to radicalization also pose a threat. It must be taken into account that children not only have a right to protection, but also a right to digital participation and empowerment.

But how can these rights be appropriately balanced in accordance with child and youth media protection? What role do social networks, messengers and digital games play in potential radicalization? What impact do artificial intelligence and provider-side recommendation systems have in this context? Why can children and young people be particularly susceptible to extremist online content and speech?

These and other questions will be addressed in the workshop in presentations and discussions with the participants. Martin Müsgens, Niklas Schmidt and Martin Holbach from the Federal Center for Child and Youth Media Protection will begin the workshop with an introductory presentation. This will be followed by practical examples and space for questions and discussion.

Participation is free of charge. Registration is required: kulturellebildung.de/register.
