Whether it's phishing, malware or online fraud, security-conscious use of digital devices and applications is as basic a skill for schoolchildren today as reading and arithmetic. However, the Cybersecurity Monitor shows that young people in particular are often inadequately protected against online dangers. The youngest age group in the survey only uses a few of the standard protective measures, such as strong passwords and an antivirus program.

Both parents and teachers often find it difficult to talk to children and young people about security in everyday digital life. The BSI media package "Cybersecurity for 10 to 14-year-olds" therefore offers teachers support in the form of ready-to-use teaching materials and further background information.

In the teacher training course, experts from the BSI's consumer protection department address the following questions, among others

  • What security risks arise in the everyday digital lives of children and young people?
  • How can children and young people secure their user accounts?
  • How can they distinguish trustworthy downloads from potential malware?
  • What forms of online fraud also affect children and young people?
  • And how can teachers incorporate the topic into their lessons?

They will provide an overview of simple protective measures for consumers' everyday digital lives and offer practical tips for using the materials in the classroom.
