Between the reality of use, youth protection & Children's rights: Why differentiated usage concepts are needed instead of blanket ban debates

Public debates about age limits for the use of social media and the use of smartphones in schools are currently highly emotional. Blanket demands for bans are often voiced. However, young people need more than symbolic politics: on the one hand, we need viable concepts with which providers, politicians, parents and educational professionals can fulfill their shared responsibility to support, protect and empower children and young people online. And on the other hand, it is about ensuring that young people's lives, perspectives and digital participation are taken into account.

• What role do age limits actually play in the context of child and youth protection?
• How can protection needs be reconciled with the right to participation and empowerment?
• And what media education perspectives and experiences can constructively advance the public debate?

Together with experts from practice and science, these questions will be discussed openly, critically and in a solution-oriented manner. Further information on the event can be found on the FSM website.

The best conversations take place in the kitchen. The Media Education Kitchen Talk therefore brings together interesting guests and opinions at one table. Current issues and challenges in media education, politics and the digital society are discussed in a relaxed atmosphere. The audience on site and in the livestream will have the opportunity to actively contribute questions.
