Fake news vs. TikTok challenges

What is potentially dangerous? What is harmful? What is fun? How can young people assess this themselves or what support do they need?

Young people today are growing up in a highly digitalized world. Smartphones and computers are standard, AI tools are child's play to use and changes to "reality" are seemingly unproblematic. Almost everyone has run a filter over a photo of themselves at some point. This has now become normal, the boundaries have shifted. What can we still believe about this knowledge, and when should we at least be skeptical? How can we recognize the differences? What does that do to us? And why is it important at all?

This online information event on Thursday, December 5, 2024 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. aims to provide information and options for action.

There are three speaker blocks:

  1. Forming opinions between fact and fake - educating people about fake news in social media: Pamela Heer is a media literacy officer at the EU initiative klicksafe. In her presentation, she will give an overview of how fake news "works" and how it works, discuss the most common fake news narratives and show counter-strategies. Participants will learn about materials to sensitize children and young people to the topic of disinformation in the classroom and beyond.
  2. Dr. Kobilke and Dr. Markiewitz from the Institute for Communication Sciences and Media Research at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München will present the results of their current study "challenge accepted", which deals with TikTok challenges. The study sheds light on which challenges exist and which of them are potentially dangerous. What motivates young people to take part? Which young people take part in potentially dangerous challenges? What can support and education look like in the best case scenario?
  3. Tom Gudella, media educator at folie8, will talk specifically about TikTok and explain how it works. What needs to be considered and what tips should teachers have to hand?

Participation is free of charge, places are limited. Further information and a PDF for download can be found at this URL
