The phenomenon of cybergrooming has increasingly become the focus of public attention in recent years. Cybergrooming is committed by anyone who influences a child by means of writings or information or communication technology with the aim of initiating sexual contact (§176b StGB). The contact can be initiated via chat portals, social networks, online games and other forms of communication on the Internet. The perpetrators pursue the intention of sexually abusing the victim online (e.g. by obtaining image or video material) or offline during real meetings.

Police crime statistics show an increasing rise in cybergrooming-related crimes. Within the last ten years, the number of registered cybergrooming cases has more than tripled. At the same time, experts assume that the number of unreported cases is high.

At the online symposium "Dunkelfeld Cybergrooming - Kinder und Jugendliche vor sexueller Gewalt schützen", cybergrooming will be examined from a criminological and pedagogical perspective. Christine Weber and Jonas Jatta work in the field of cybercrime research at the Criminalistics Institute of the Federal Criminal Police Office. At the symposium, they will give an insight into the development of the number of cases in the field of cybergrooming and what knowledge there is about the perpetrators. Rebecca Michl-Krauß from the EU initiative klicksafe will show why it is important that children and young people are made aware of the issue of cybergrooming at an early stage and what parents and educational professionals can do.

The specialist afternoon is a cooperative event organized by the South Hesse Police Headquarters, the South Hesse Regional Office of the Network against Violence, and the Child and Youth Development Office of the Darmstadt-Dieburg District Youth Welfare Office.
