The fact that digitalization is challenging democracy is a commonplace in public debate. But how are the current breakthroughs and increasing adaptation in the field of artificial intelligence changing this diagnosis?
In the jumblr session: #special, we will focus on the question of how democratic public spheres are changing under the conditions of the increased use of AI. In particular, we will discuss whether and to what extent an increase in disinformation can be expected and what effects can be expected, especially in the context of elections. We will also talk about how changing practices of media reception through assistants, bots and the automation of journalistic services potentially affect democratic decision-making. The discussion will raise awareness of specific developments and highlight ways to develop adequate media awareness in a changing information environment.
Practical expert: Prof. Dr. Thorsten Thiel. He is Professor of Democracy Promotion and Digital Policy at the University of Erfurt. He was previously head of the "Democracy and Digitalization" research group at the Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society. His research interests include digital sovereignty, the digital structural change of the public sphere and democratic innovations.
Moderation: Dr. Florian Kerkau, Managing Director of Landesfachband Medienbildung Brandenburg e.V.
