February 11, 2025 is Safer Internet Day (SID). Hundreds of schools, associations and other institutions across Germany are taking part. In Germany, SID is coordinated by the EU initiative klicksafe. Under the motto "No likes for lies! Recognize extremism, populism and deepfakes online", klicksafe invites all pupils in grades 8 to 10 across Germany to take part in a digital school lesson. In these interactive 90 minutes, we will empower young people to recognize extremist narratives and manipulative deepfakes in social media and to arm themselves against them.

What can school classes expect?
During the 90-minute event, pupils will explore the distribution mechanisms of right-wing extremist and anti-democratic online content in an activating and practice-oriented way. Experts in media education and youth media protection provide basic knowledge and important background information. Current examples encourage pupils to reflect. Interactive live polls and the opportunity to ask questions in advance or via moderated chat allow participants to take an active part in the event. In a group work phase, the young people are also asked to develop their own strategies for dealing confidently with information online. This creates a varied learning process that strengthens knowledge and skills in equal measure.

The digital school lesson is a free campaign of the German Safer Internet Center.
