Video statement on Safer Internet Day 2026

Karin Prien - Federal Minister for Education and Family Affairs

"AI bots can make our everyday lives much easier. Letters to authorities can be formulated in seconds. Questions of knowledge are answered at the snap of a finger. Even if you ask the AI what helps against heartache, it has an answer. As a result, some people feel better understood by the AI than by their social environment. They regard the AI as their best friend; they even fall in love with it. Precisely because the algorithm perfectly meets their expectations. But this understanding is a digital illusion. A machine does not empathize. Real relationships develop through the exchange of different points of view. Closeness grows through real encounters. We need conversations with real people for social cohesion. I think it's great that the klicksafe initiative is drawing attention to this connection. And I would like to thank those who make Safer Internet Day unique with their innovative ideas. I wish them all every success with their projects. But above all, I hope that the message of Safer Internet Day is heard by a great many people."

Materials for Safer Internet Day 2026

For educational practice: AI and me. How artificial intelligence is shaping our lives.

AI has the potential to profoundly change our world. This poses important questions for us: How far do we want and are we allowed to allow technology to determine us? What ethical questions arise? How are developments in the field of AI currently regulated? All of these aspects are addressed in our new teaching material, which was created in cooperation with the Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle Multimedia-Diensteanbieter (FSM). In six teaching projects, young people are encouraged to form their own opinions on AI and its challenges. The material is recommended for use in educational practice from year 7 onwards.

For parents and guardians: My child and AI - growing up with artificial proximity

AI is already shaping the way children and young people grow up - from everyday decisions to school issues and emotional topics.Parents are therefore faced with the challenge of accompanying their children in a world increasingly characterized by artificial proximity. In our new brochure, we provide parents with important tips and support on AI in everyday family life. The material, developed together with Nummer gegen Kummer, is now available to order and download from us to coincide with Safer Internet Day.

For young people: Info cards - AI and me.

With the info cards for our campaign "AI and me. In an artificial relationship.", you can raise young people's awareness of dealing with artificial intelligence in a low-threshold way. The info cards deal with the topics "Friendship with AI", "Feelings for AI" and "Comfort through AI". Through reflection questions, they encourage young people to critically examine their relationships with AI systems. Young people are also informed about possible risks when using AI systems. Use the info cards directly on Safer Internet Day for your campaigns.
