In Germany , Roblox carries an age rating of “16 and up.” This age rating is assigned as part of the International Age Rating Coalition’s (IARC) automated rating system and is regularly reviewed for accuracy in Germany by the Entertainment Software Self-Regulation Body (USK).

This age rating provides parents with important guidance but does not dictate the specific age at which their own child may use Roblox. In Germany, under the so-called “parental privilege,” parents generally decide for themselves whether to allow their child to use a game even if the child is below the specified age rating. In doing so, they can take into account the age rating as well as their child’s individual maturity and the content their child encounters on Roblox.

Roblox offers a vast variety of games and ways to connect with other users. However, it is precisely this variety that also poses some risks parents should be aware of.

• Inappropriate content: The “experiences” on Roblox are developed by various creators and can therefore vary greatly from one another. In addition to games that are suitable for younger children, there are, for example, violent or frightening horror games. Roblox has implemented various measures to classify content by age and restrict access to certain experiences. Nevertheless, children may still encounter content that is not appropriate for their age.
• Interaction with Other Players: Roblox offers various ways to play and communicate with others. Even though the platform now better differentiates communication options by age, children and teens may encounter unpleasant or problematic interactions. In doing so, they may face cyberbullying or cybergrooming. Children should therefore know how to respond in such situations and where to get help.
• Purchasing Incentives and Robux: The virtual currency Robux must be purchased with real money and can be spent in numerous “experiences” on in-game items or perks. In some “experiences,” there are numerous purchasing options and mechanisms designed to repeatedly encourage players to spend money. These include, for example, limited-time offers, special perks for paying players, or prominently placed prompts to buy. As a result, children can easily be tempted to spend money on digital content.
• Long Playtimes: On Roblox, there are constantly new “experiences” to discover, and many games can be played with friends. This can lead children to stay on the platform longer than originally planned. Therefore, parents should keep an eye on playtime and agree on rules for use together with their child.

For children and teens, Roblox can quickly become something that goes far beyond just playing the game. There are numerous videos and livestreams about Roblox on YouTube, TikTok, and Twitch. There, children can follow their favorite streamers, discover new “experiences,” or interact with other fans. Discord communities can also be part of this Roblox world. This gives rise to additional potential risks that extend beyond the use of the Roblox platform itself.

• Streamers and content creators: Roblox streamers can become important role models for children. However, some of them also exhibit problematic behavior, such as spending large amounts of Robux to buy rare items or unlock particularly elaborate content. It’s not always obvious to children that content creators earn money from their videos and that spectacular purchases can help generate attention and reach. The language and behavior of some role models can also be problematic at times, as they fail to take into account that many of their viewers are minors. The widespread fascination with Roblox is also repeatedly exploited for scams or questionable content.
• Roblox as a Gateway to Other Platforms: Anyone who uses Roblox content on YouTube, TikTok, Twitch, or Discord may also encounter content and features there that are restricted or filtered on Roblox. This can include, for example, inappropriate content, problematic comments, or unwanted contacts. Roblox itself points out that when switching to other websites or apps, the platform’s protective measures may no longer apply. Parents should therefore keep track of which other platforms their child uses in connection with Roblox.
• Safe Settings Beyond Roblox: Because the Roblox world extends across various platforms, parents must also ensure appropriate protection on those platforms. This presents them with the challenge of keeping track of multiple platforms and determining which safety and privacy settings are appropriate for each one.
