ChatGPT is a chatbot capable of using generative AI to provide answers to all kinds of questions— in a style that’s virtually indistinguishable from real human responses . Since OpenAI’s release in late 2022, students have also discovered the chatbot as a practical tool for their daily school life. Whether they’re facing a difficult math problem, need to summarize a book, or are preparing a history presentation—ChatGPT provides tailored answers and solutions in many areas. But how reliable is ChatGPT? It’s clear that ChatGPT wasn’t trained to be truthful. The answers are therefore not error-free per se; depending on how the chatbot is used, sources may be missing or may not always be reputable. This makes it all the more important to support young people in using chatbots like ChatGPT, to teach them how to evaluate sources, to educate them about disinformation, and to strengthen their information literacy.

The klicksafe resources provide educators with an overview of ChatGPT and the challenges that may arise from using the chatbot. Five lesson examples then offer suggestions for using AI-based chatbots like ChatGPT in the classroom or as part of extracurricular projects and for discussing them with children and teens.

The lesson examples were provided to klicksafe courtesy of saferinternet.at and have been slightly adapted.
