Action week on social mediaChildren are not content!

Ludwigshafen, 20.06.2025 | The best photos of children are often taken on vacation and parents share the snapshots on social networks. In doing so, they forget about potential risks such as misuse of the photos by strangers. This is why the media literacy initiatives klicksafe, SCHAU HIN! Was Dein Kind mit Medien macht and Gutes Aufwachsen mit Medien as well as the Federal Center for Child and Youth Media Protection and the Independent Commissioner for Child Sexual Abuse Issues are therefore warning against sharing children's photos or videos online and are launching a joint campaign week on social media.
No matter how cute or funny children's photos may be - responsible use of children's photos on the internet is essential. While it used to be enough to make children unrecognizable by placing a smiley face over their faces to protect them, new AI programs are now rendering this protection ineffective. Images of children online are being misused for fraud, blackmail and the creation of abusive images, among other things. Anyone who publishes children's photos or videos must be aware that this can also have undesirable consequences for the child in the long term - the internet forgets nothing.
Studies show that children's pictures are often shared on social networks without their consent. According to the study, parents do not feel safe when using various services and when it comes to what can happen to their data. As a result, their decisions are such that they hardly protect their data and that of their children adequately.
The five partners: klicksafe, SCHAU HIN!, Gutes Aufwachsen mit Medien, the Bundeszentrale für Kinder- und Jugendmedienschutz (BzKJ) and the Unabhängige Beauftragte für Fragen des sexuellen Kindesmissbrauchs (Independent Commissioner for Child Sexual Abuse Issues) have joined forces to educate children about the safe and responsible use of children's images online as part of a campaign week before the start of the vacations.
The aim of the campaign is to sensitize parents not to share images of children carelessly and to respect the rights of their children. To support parents in dealing responsibly with children's images, specific information, tips and guides can be found on the social media channels of klicksafe, SCHAU HIN! and Gutes Aufwachsen mit Medien as well as the BzKJ and UBSKM during the campaign period from June 23 to 30.
"Protecting our children starts with every click. On Instagram, YouTube and TikTok, hundreds of thousands of people get a direct insight into the everyday lives and bedrooms of children. These supposedly harmless images and videos can be stored permanently and can be misused. We therefore need a greater awareness of digital care," explains Deborah Woldemichael, head of the EU initiative klicksafe at the Rhineland-Palatinate Media Authority.
