With brains against AI fakesFit in dealing with artificial intelligence and deepfakes - klicksafe launches nationwide "Back to School" campaign 2025 in September
Ludwigshafen, 28.08.2025 | Every year, the "Back to School" campaign of the EU initiative klicksafe, for which the Rhineland-Palatinate Media Authority is responsible in Germany, supports teachers, pupils and parents at the beginning of the school year with new teaching materials and digital offers on current media literacy topics. This year's campaign focuses on the topic of "Safe use of AI and deepfakes". Deepfakes are manipulated media content such as images, videos or sound files that are either altered or completely recreated with the help of AI. The technology has long since arrived in our everyday lives, including in the classroom. With its nationwide campaign, klicksafe is raising awareness of the opportunities and risks of this new technology. The aim is to give pupils, parents and educational professionals guidance and strengthen their digital skills.
The JIM Study 2024 shows that over three fifths of young people between the ages of 14 and 19 already use AI tools themselves, most frequently for school or homework. However, the results of AI are often not or not sufficiently scrutinized. A special evaluation of the PISA 2022 study on digital information literacy shows that most young people generally find it difficult to critically assess the quality of online content. When researching online, they very often rely on just one source or do not check content for accuracy before adopting and sharing it. AI-generated content and deepfakes exacerbate these problems, which have long since arrived in school practice.
Federal Youth Minister Karin Prien says: "Artificial intelligence opens up completely new opportunities for children and young people: AI facilitates access to knowledge, can make learning more exciting and encourage creativity. At the same time, however, it also entails risks - such as deception, manipulation or the spread of deepfakes. To enable young people to use AI safely, they need support, guidance and media skills. This is exactly where klicksafe comes in: The back-to-school campaign empowers parents, teachers and young people to better understand AI and use it safely."
Dr. Marc Jan Eumann, Director of the Rhineland-Palatinate Media Authority, says: "Children and young people are often exposed to great risks online. klicksafe helps them to recognize deepfakes and classify them correctly. Dealing confidently with AI is an important building block for our democratic future - media literacy is democratic literacy."
In line with the motto of this year's campaign, klicksafe has these offers for educational professionals and educators:
The new klicksafe offers from grade 7 onwards provide numerous tips and information on the safe use of AI applications and deepfakes. The materials can help to improve pupils' media skills.
