Safer Internet Day 2026: Over 50,000 young people discuss how to deal with AI companions

Safer Internet Day on 10.02.2026 met with a great response throughout Germany: more than 1000 schools, associations, libraries, companies and initiatives got involved with their own campaigns and events. The high level of participation underlines the broad social commitment to media literacy and the responsible use of digital technologies. The klicksafe school lesson is once again particularly popular, with over 50,000 young people taking part on the day. Safer Internet Day has been coordinated in Germany by the EU initiative klicksafe for more than 20 years.

The high level of participation nationwide shows a broad commitment to a better Internet and against manipulative disinformation. The Digital School Lesson, which can now be streamed directly from schools into classrooms, is brand new and a complete success: Over 25,000 young people learn how to recognize extremist fakes and what they can do about them. Safer Internet Day has been organized in Germany for more than 20 years by the EU initiative klicksafe.

klicksafe, together with ZDF and the Rhineland-Palatinate consumer advice center, receives the coveted EduMedia medal and seal at the prestigious Comenius EduMedia Awards. The award went to the "Young Crime" format with the episode "Abzocke im Netz" including the accompanying klicksafe teaching material. In the ZDFtivi format, fictionalized cases of youth crime are re-enacted and judged by a jury of young people.
