Study by the Alliance against CyberbullyingOver 2 million children affected by cyberbullying

Cyberbullying among children and young people has continued to increase. Currently, 18.5 percent of schoolchildren are affected. In absolute figures, that is more than two million children and young people. This is shown by the current study "Cyberlife V - Cyberbullying among schoolchildren" by the Alliance against Cyberbullying. We provide parents and teachers with information on how to react correctly in the event of cyberbullying.

According to the study, the proportion of pupils who have been affected by cyberbullying increased by 1.8 percentage points compared to the previous study in 2022. 13% of children and young people have turned to alcohol, tablets or drugs out of despair and one in four of those affected have had suicidal thoughts (26%).

The good news is that prevention measures in schools are having an effect. In its press release on the current study, the Alliance Against Cyberbullying states that schools that take preventative measures have fewer cases of cyberbullying.

For the survey, 637 teachers, 1,061 parents and 4213 pupils across Germany were questioned on the topic of bullying and cyberbullying in an online survey from May to July 2024. The study results can be downloaded and further information can be found on the website of the Alliance Against Cyberbullying.
