Annual statistics 2024 of the number against grief
In 2024, the most common concerns of young people seeking advice on the phone and online were psychological stress, family conflicts, loneliness and self-harming behavior. In total, around 83,000 counseling sessions were held for children and young people last year.
Parents also made extensive use of the support offered by the number against grief, with around half of them using the service for the first time. Parents mainly sought advice on the topics of excessive demands and helplessness in everyday parenting, relationships with children and problems with (ex-)partners. Around 20,000 conversations with parents were conducted by Nummer gegen Kummer in 2024.

Nummer gegen Kummer e.V. is the umbrella organization for local associations that operate child and youth helplines and parent helplines in Germany. The current 87 local providers of the helplines are mainly local associations of the German Child Protection Association and other welfare organizations. This network is the largest free telephone counseling service for children, young people and parents in Germany. Specially trained and mainly volunteer counselors support callers by helping them to help themselves with everyday problems and difficult life situations. To finance the network, Nummer gegen Kummer e.V. and its supporting associations seek donations from companies, organizations and private individuals nationwide.
Nummer gegen Kummer e.V. emerged from the German Child Protection Association and is associated with it as a member in its objectives. The umbrella organization is a member of Child Helpline International.
Nummer gegen Kummer e.V. is funded by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth and supported by Deutsche Telekom. As a cooperation partner of the number against Kummer e.V., Deutsche Telekom has been providing the technical infrastructure for the nationwide counseling service free of charge since 1991. It also pays the connection fees for calls to the counseling hotlines.
