Netflix, Disney+ & Co - Using streaming services safely
Media libraries, video portals like YouTube and streaming services are increasingly pushing back linear television. According to the current JIM Study 2019, two-thirds of households with children have a smart TV with access to the internet and media libraries. Around three out of four families across Germany also have a subscription to a video-on-demand service. In addition to YouTube, streaming movies and series is also popular among children and young people. For this, children and young people primarily use Netflix: 24% of 12-13 year-olds and 42% of 14- and 15-year-olds regularly watch Netflix content.
A new video-on-demand service, Disney+, was launched in Germany on March 24. Disney classics, Pixar animated films and content on popular franchises such as Marvel or Star Wars make Disney+ particularly interesting for a young target group.
Depending on their age group, children already use streaming services largely independently. Teenagers may even have their own profile on Netflix. That makes it all the more important for parents to know how to protect their children from inappropriate content.
We took a closer look at the four streaming services Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and Maxdome (in future Joyn PLUS+). In the new guide, we show how parents can set these services in a child-friendly way and conclude with tips on how to deal with streaming offers in everyday family life.
