Cell phone sector snacksHandysektor publishes new material on fake news and AI

Numerous materials for media education project work can be found online. However, these are mostly prepared for professionals. With the Snacks, Handysektor offers peer-to-peer materials for young people that pupils can use to independently implement media literacy projects at their school. A new topic package on fake news and artificial intelligence has now been published in the material series.

The "Snacks" series is aimed at committed young people who want to promote media literacy at their school. The focus is on pedagogically and didactically effective implementation and easy accessibility for pupils.

All material packages are structured according to the same system and prepare the multipliers for their project:

  • Background information: Each material package contains helpful articles, videos or graphics on the topic.
  • Student questions: Sample questions that classmates can ask in the project.
  • Work materials: Each with a schedule, worksheets, presentations or craft templates. These can be used directly by the multipliers or adapted and supplemented with their own ideas.

From a short project to a day of action

Even committed young people can sometimes find it difficult to implement extensive project ideas in everyday school life. That's why the snacks are divided into small material snacks with a duration of 15 to a maximum of 45 minutes. These can be implemented individually or together - from a short project during the break to a media literacy activity day.

A simple symbol system with emojis indicates the length of the project (apple = 15 minutes, cupcake = 30 minutes, pasta = 45 minutes) and therefore allows for flexible combinations.

New material package on fake news and artificial intelligence published

So far, young people have been able to choose from three material packages on the topics of influencers, privacy and cyberbullying. In March, a new package on fake news and AI was added to this selection. The package comprises four individual projects:

  • Using chatbots at school: rules for the use of AI at school
  • What does your feed say about you?: Critical examination of algorithms in social media
  • Fake or not fake?: Methods for recognizing fake news online
  • Prompt It Like A Pro: Tips for successful prompting in ChatGPT and co.
