EU project MEET presents TOOLKIT

The EU project "MEET - Media Education for Equity and Tolerance" on intercultural media education has come to an end after 27 months. The results are now available in the form of a TOOLKIT at https://meetolerance.eu/.

Under the leadership of the University of Florence, the ErasmusPlus project explored the question of how young people can see through the mechanisms of propaganda and discrimination in their forms of media expression and at the same time learn a different practice of expressing their opinions. The project consortium from five European countries, including medien+bildung.com from Ludwigshafen, has been developing learning scenarios for young people aged 14 to 20 since 2016, with the aim of promoting an understanding that is both critical of the media and intercultural, as well as a conscious use of media. The target group was primarily young people from so-called socially disadvantaged milieus. In an application-oriented research process, the young people and their teachers were involved in the development of the concepts in order to jointly design methods of intercultural media education.

The results are nowavailablein the form of a TOOLKIT athttps://meetolerance.eu/.  There you will find, among other things:

  • Six detailed, tested and evaluated learning scenarios for "disadvantaged" youth / young adults in three languages: English, French and German. Some learning scenarios are also available in Slovenian.
  • The theoretical core of the project, the "Guidelines for Universal and Intercultural Learning in Media Culture and Society", as a basis for the training of multipliers. Here, the didactic principles of media education are intertwined with those of intercultural learning.
  • A video guide for professionals: Educational Documentary
  • Policy recommendations and evaluation reports.

The materials are designed to enable teachers with no prior knowledge to apply the concepts themselves. The central elements are the learning dimensions UNDERSTANDING * SELF EXPRESSION * ENGAGEMENT, whereby all three levels are didactically interlocked and structured in a spiral:

UNDERSTANDING takes an integrated look at many areas: Media handling and communication strategies, mechanisms of discrimination and exclusion, own learning obstacles, cultural barriers or potentials.

SELF EXPRESSION aims at increasing communicative skills, recognizing and overcoming potential limitations. At the same time, visualization expands communication skills, feedback-giving is practiced and the competence to reflect on one's own learning is strengthened.

ENGAGEMENT aims to empower students to develop their own point of view and advocate it publicly.
