Data Protection Media Award DAME 2020: Jury announces nominations
The nominees are:
Tobias Schießl, Max Osenstätter, Oliver Schnuck and Robert Schöffel with the multi-part Instagram story "Dating app Lovoo".
In the story video contribution of the "News-WG", a young political format of the Bayerischer Rundfunk on Instagram, the journalists uncovered a vulnerability in the dating app Lovoo, which is used by millions, in a self-experiment. The problematic radar function of Lovoo and other dating app providers makes location and user:inside data public, so that a detailed movement pattern of entire groups of people can be created.
Hannes Munzinger and Felix Ebert with the print article "Wie wir uns verraten / Auf Sendung" (Note: Paid content).
The print article from the Süddeutsche Zeitung vividly and informatively describes the extent to which the tracking mania on smartphones has now reached. Numerous apps continuously monitor users and create a comprehensive profile without their knowledge, sell it or use it for their own advertising purposes. The article by Hannes Munzinger and Felix Ebert provides interesting facts, technical correlations and explanatory graphics.
Svea Eckert with the video contribution "Smart Speaker: Where Alexa, Siri & Co. secretly listen in".
"Ctrl+f" is a young YouTube format from funk. The reporter Svea Eckert finds out in a self-experiment with her Amazon Echo smart speaker that the device listens to her even when it should not. That's because smart speakers make mistakes. They understand voice commands that are not voice commands. How often do these mistakes happen? And who is listening in on the data analysis? In the almost 20-minute report, she goes on the trail of her own data.
Jury enthusiastic about the educational success of the contributions in their target group
The diversity of the submissions and the increased number of media productions on the topic of data protection particularly impressed the jury this year. "The contributions of this year's nominees prove that even a complex topic like data protection can be explained in a comprehensible way across all media. Especially for the younger target group, who spend a lot of time on the Internet, education about the extent of their use is crucial," explains BvD Chairman Thomas Spaeing.
In addition to Spaeing, the other members of the jury are once again Barbara Thiel, State Commissioner for Data Protection in Lower Saxony, Frederick Richter, Chairman of the Stiftung Datenschutz (Data Protection Foundation), Dr. Sebastian Sprenger from the DATEV-Stiftung Zukunft (DATEV Foundation for the Future), Birgit Kimmel and Stefanie Rack from the EU initiative klicksafe, and for the first time Marion Zinkeler, Executive Director of the Verbraucherzentrale Bayern (Bavarian Consumer Advice Center). This year's Data Privacy Media Award is once again sponsored by the DATEV Foundation for the Future, and the EU initiative klicksafe is the media partner.
Winner to be announced on May 19, 2021, at Berlin's Ellington Hotel
The festive award ceremony will take place as part of the BvD Association Days on May 19 in Berlin, through which the TV presenter Ralph Caspers will lead in compliance with the applicable distance and hygiene regulations. Congress participants will, however, follow the event in a livestream due to the current situation.
