Meta AIThese are the new AI functions in Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook

In other countries, Meta AI has already been integrated into Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook services for some time. About a year ago, we reported that Meta was making preparations to introduce Meta AI in the EU. However, the terms of use were so problematic that there was great concern as to whether the new functions violated EU law. The main concern was the processing of user data for further training of the AI model.
After around a year, Meta has now succeeded in adapting the terms of use and functions of its Meta AI to the consumer protection standards of the European Union. Users from Germany can now also access Meta AI in the three services Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook.
Instagram: If you click on the "Messages" icon in your Instagram app, you will see a blue circle and "Ask or search Meta AI" in the search slot at the top. As soon as you have started a conversation with Meta AI, you can see and select it in the message overview just like other conversations. In addition to simple conversations and answers to questions, Meta AI will also be able to analyze and generate images on Instagram in the future. However, this feature does not yet work.
WhatsApp: You can also have individual conversations with Meta AI on WhatsApp. However, a special feature is that Meta AI can also be used in group chats. By entering "@Meta AI", content generated by Meta AI can be posted directly in the group chat. Anyone who wants to continue interacting with Meta AI's contribution in the group chat can mark the message and click on Reply. All people in a group chat can therefore still decide for themselves whether they want to interact with Meta AI or not. It should also be possible for images to be generated and analyzed by Meta AI on WhatsApp, although this is not yet possible.
Facebook: Meta AI was not yet accessible for us on Facebook and could therefore not be tested. The company provides information about Meta AI on Facebook on this page: https://www.facebook.com/help/994963392422769
What does Meta AI's terms of use say?
Meta has created its own terms of use for users in the EU. Anyone wishing to use Meta AI must agree to these terms beforehand.
- Personal information: Meta warns against sharing personal information with Meta AI if you want to ensure that this information is not used and stored. Examples include Meta account identifiers, passwords, financial information or other sensitive topics. All information shared with Meta AI can be stored and used to further personalize Meta AI's responses.
- Disclosure to third parties: Anyone who discloses personal information in a chat with Meta AI must expect that this information could also be disclosed to third parties. For example, if Meta AI uses a search engine to obtain further information about the query. In this case, private information could be passed on to the operator of the search engine. Here you can see which companies Meta AI may share data with: https://www.facebook.com/privacy/dialog/ai-partners
- Privacy: Chats with Meta AI can be checked by Meta. This can be automated by machines as well as by humans. Meta reserves the right to review chats in order to improve the service or to take action against illegal activities.
- Inappropriate content: The community standards of the Meta platforms also apply in chats with Meta AI. This means that, for example, insults, hatred and sexual violence can also lead to Meta taking action against users when interacting with Meta AI.
- Reliability of responses: Meta clearly points out to that responses from Meta AI are not reliable: "You should not rely on the outputs in any way (...). If you want to use outputs for any reason, it is your sole responsibility to check them." Elsewhere, Meta points out that answers can even be dangerous: "We do not guarantee that [the answers] will be safe, secure and error-free (...)".
Can Meta AI be removed again?
No, Meta AI cannot be removed from the services. If you want to ensure that Meta AI does not process any of your data, you should not use any Meta AI functions. There are also the following options:
- Objection to the use of your own information for AI at Meta
It is possible to object to the use of your own data by Meta AI. At the moment, the use of this data seems to be suspended in the EU anyway. However, it is unclear whether this could change again in the future. Meta itself writes: "Due to feedback from regulators, we continue to postpone our planned change regarding the use of your information from Meta products to further develop and improve AI at Meta. We will inform you before we start using this information for this purpose and let you know how you can exercise your right to object." However, you can already object via this form: https://www.facebook.com/help/contact/6359191084165019 (you must be logged in to your account to access the link). - Rights of the data subject regarding third-party information used for AI at Meta
Anyone wishing to object to or restrict the processing of personal information from third-party providers used for the development and improvement of AI at Meta can do so here: https://www.facebook.com/help/contact/510058597920541 - Deleting Meta AI conversations in Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook is currently not easily possible!
At the moment, you can only delete individual messages or the entire chat with Meta AI for yourself. This means that individual messages or the entire conversation are no longer visible to you. However, the underlying data is still stored on Meta's servers and will not be deleted. To achieve this, the entire account with all content must be deleted from Instagram, WhatsApp or Facebook.
Tips for parents
- Use of Meta AI only from the age of 13: According to the general terms and conditions, the use of all Meta services is only permitted from the age of 13. This minimum age also applies to the use of Meta AI.
- Private information: Make it clear to your child that they should not disclose any private information, even when dealing with artificial intelligence.
- Unreliable information: Explain to your child that although Meta AI provides convincing-sounding answers, it can also provide false information. Show your child how they can find information on the internet without having to rely on Meta AI.
- High energy consumption: It is now known that conversations with artificial intelligence consume a lot of energy. It therefore makes sense to avoid unnecessary conversations with AIs wherever possible. It is therefore better to use a search engine for simple search queries, as the energy consumption is significantly lower than with an AI.
