Data Protection Media Prize 2024: "Digital Violence - Women in the Spotlight"

Angelique Geray received the main prize of 3,000 euros for her contribution "Digitale Gewalt - Frauen im Visier", which appeared last year in the RTL format EXTRA. The video shows empathetic interviews with women affected by digital violence. The reporter also traces the perpetrators and tries to find out what drives them when, for example, they use AI-generated pornographic material of their relatives and disseminate it. The jury particularly praised Geray's commitment and emphasized the added social value of her contribution to raising awareness of digital violence against women.

Special Youth Award: "What passers-by teach us about data protection"

The special youth prize of 1,500 euros went to Elisha Nneji for the YouTube contribution "What passers-by teach us about data protection". By producing content on social media, citizens come into contact with the topic of data protection at a low threshold. The jury was particularly impressed by how enthusiastic and authentic Nneji is when talking to passers-by about data protection issues.

Special prize for best interactive online contribution: "Wohnort, Arbeit, Ausspioniert: How location data jeopardizes Germany's security"

Rebecca Ciesielski was awarded a special prize for the best interactive online contributionwith the article "Wohnort, Arbeit, Ausspioniert: How location data jeopardizes Germany's security". It is also endowed with 1,500 euros and is sponsored by the German Donations Council. The research by Bayerischer Rundfunk and netzpolitik.org shows how location information can be easily acquired and analyzed in huge data sets. The research shows that the movement profiles of several million people from all over Germany can be reconstructed, which can be very detailed. The authors illustrate the risk by analyzing the movement profiles to and around security-relevant areas such as barracks or areas of the Federal Criminal Police Office.
