Artificial intelligence (AI) is now an integral part of our everyday lives. We use AI sometimes more and sometimes less consciously: we experience AI directly when creating texts using applications such as ChatGPT. However, not everyone is always aware that facial recognition for unlocking smartphones, for example, is also based on AI. Developments in this technological field are rapid. So-called generative AIs are able to create content in the form of text, images, songs, videos, etc. They offer users new opportunities to try out their creativity.
However, in addition to many opportunities , such applications also increase the risks. Generative AI is used in the context of disinformation and cyberbullying, for example, when fake images, known as deepfakes, are created using AI. In spring 2023, an AI-generated image of former Pope Francis in a white down coat attracted a great deal of media attention and made deepfakes known to a wide audience. However, deceptively real nude images or videos with sexual acts can also be generated. These are also known as deepnudes or deepfake pornography. Images of a person's face are often seamlessly inserted into images of naked bodies or pornographic video material using AI.
The rapid developments in the field of AI make it increasingly difficult to distinguish content created by AI from real information and images. It is therefore essential to sensitize young people to the risks of AI and to teach them how to use it competently and responsibly. Media education is essential for this in order to enable children and young people to critically examine content and information and to be aware of their responsibility when using AI applications, in addition to imparting technical knowledge. With the new teaching material from klicksafe and the FSM, teachers can make an important contribution and equip young people with the necessary skills for a future with AI.
What does the new teaching material offer?
First, the basics of AI are explained in an introductory chapter. What types of AI are there? How has AI developed? What are the best-known applications? And how is AI already regulated today?
The next chapter looks at how AI is shaping our lives today and in the future. Topics such as filters and algorithms play a role here. But also how AI affects our interpersonal relationships, our creativity, our safety and much more.
The third chapter deals specifically with the teaching of AI skills as an interdisciplinary, cross-cutting task in schools. The material offers suggestions for teaching AI skills at different levels and explains how assessment and feedback of student performance is possible despite AI. Of course, it also looks at how teachers can use AI in a meaningful way, for example through chatbots in the classroom. Finally, practical AI tools for the classroom are presented.
Finally, the six projects on topics such as "The 10 commandments of AI ethics", "Virtual stars - when influencers are not human" and "AI as learning buddies" form the "heart" of the teaching material. The use of the teaching material is recommended from the seventh grade (12 years).

On February 12, 2026 from 14:00-15:00, we are offering a web seminar on the new teaching material together with the FSM. After a brief introduction to the topic of AI in young people's everyday lives, the authors from klicksafe and FSM will present some project examples from the material.

You are welcome to use our new teaching material to take part in Safer Internet Day (SID) on February 10, 2026. Throughout the month of February, you can register your lessons and extracurricular projects on the topic of artificial intelligence with us as a register for the SID campaign.
