In 2024, the "National Rape Day" went viral on the German-speaking internet. There were numerous posts on social media, internet and print media reported on it and there were also warnings from politicians. The problem: "National Rape Day" is a hoax, i.e. false information deliberately spread to cause unrest. And this was already known in 2024, as the "National Rape Day" hoax had also appeared in other countries in previous years. Leonie Oehmig from the Institute for Strategic Dialogue Germany (ISD Germany) explains to us how a well-known hoax came to be spread again in Germany. The basis for our conversation is the report "When Hoaxes Make the Headlines: The Spread of 'National Rape Day' on TikTok" which Ms. Oehmig wrote together with her colleagues at ISD.
