klicksafe asks... (15): Do we need more data literacy?
Content
We are surrounded by data in our everyday lives: whether we are checking the weather forecast, keeping a household book or preparing food according to a recipe. But data also has a social relevance that should not be underestimated: statistics on employment, crime and voting behavior regularly form the basis for political decisions that affect us all. So wouldn't it make sense for children to be taught "data literacy"? We talk to Prof. Dr. Ilka Wolter about precisely this question. She works at the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories and is one of the heads of the project "Data Literacy - Digital and data-related skills in Germany". Together with her, we consider where data literacy and media literacy complement each other and why confident handling of data leads to greater social participation.
