Media literacy is a key prerequisite for the safe, critical, and independent use of digital media. The EU’s nationwide media literacy initiative, klicksafe, aims to help people strengthen their media literacy. Through a wide range of resources, it promotes the competent and critical use of digital services.

klicksafe brings together practical information, materials, and resources on topics such as social media, data protection, artificial intelligence, cyberbullying, disinformation, cybergrooming, Gaming, messaging services and digital youth protection. We specifically target people who support children and adolescents in their media education. This includes, among others:

  • Parents and guardians
  • Teachers
  • Educational professionals
  • Outreach workers
  • Child and youth workers

At the same time, our resources are open to anyone who wants to develop their own media literacy and better understand digital trends.

On our independent information portal, www.klicksafe.de, users can find a wealth of up-to-date information, practical tips, and helpful resources on digital services and topics. They’ll find answers to important questions such as:

  • How can young people use social media safely?
  • How can media literacy be promoted in schools and at home?
  • What should parents know about TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp, or Snapchat?
  • How can children and teens be protected from cyberbullying?
  • How can you spot fake news and disinformation?
  • What opportunities and risks does artificial intelligence present?

Our areas of activity also include conducting national campaigns and developing concepts for nationwide training programs for teachers and other professionals. We also support training programs for children, teens, parents, teachers, and professionals on the opportunities and risks of the internet. Furthermore, klicksafe connects initiatives and stakeholders in Germany and across Europe to promote media literacy online.

klicksafe is the German Awareness Center within the European Union’s Digital Europe Program (DIGITAL) and is implemented by the Rhineland-Palatinate Media Authority (coordination) in cooperation with the Federal Center for the Protection of Children and Youth in the Media (BzKJ). Since 2008, klicksafe has coordinated the Safer Internet Center DE, which includes the Internet hotlines of eco, FSM, and jugendschutz.net, as well as the “Nummer gegen Kummer” helpline.
